PARENT NOTE – December 10, 2018
“Run YOUR Race”
Hebrews 12:1

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Is it beginning to look like Christmas around your house?  It is here, and I am grateful for the opportunities we have at Highland Christian to reflect on what it means that God sent his only Son to redeem us, to save us from our sins and bring us back into a right relationship with God.  But He doesn’t stop there.  As you may remember from Ephesians 2:10, our theme verse of two years ago, Christ has good work prepared for us to do.  That is our purpose here – learning at high levels so students are prepared for those good works.  While we were very happy to achieve our ‘A’ rating from the state, please know, it’s not about us – it’s about prepared students.  A big focus for us this year is to improve automatic recall of math facts.  In an effort to prepare students for the higher order math thinking skills that colleges want, schools have backed off on some of what became derisively called “drill and kill”.  While the higher order skills are critical, it’s hard to learn those skills if you have to stop and think about what 9 times 8 is.  So, back to the subject of Christmas, if you’re still looking for stocking stuffers, feel free to throw in a pack of flash cards.  And if there isn’t rejoicing on Christmas morning for flash cards, feel free to blame it on me!

6. Box Tops for Education:  Last call for Box Tops in 2018!  There are many that expire on 12/15/18 and must be mailed in by that date to be counted for our fundraising.  Please send in any you may have to be included in our last mailing for 2018.  Don’t forget to ask your family and friends if they might have a stash already collected.  Every Box Top pays 10 cents to HCS for our Reading Programs.  Let’s not let that cash be thrown away in the trash!  The winner of the November Box Top Collection Contest was Mrs. Reynhout’s 2nd grade class with 264 Box Tops!  They earned a special treat along with the privilege to display the HCS Box Top Traveling Trophy until the January winner is announced.  Great job 2R!
